The Fireside Chats

I have several different genre’s that I read from. I tend to bounce back and forth between the different genre’s so that I don’t grow bored with one genre or another because I hang around with one for too long.

Horror = I have quite a few selections from this genre, most notably from authors Stephen King, Joe Hill and Darcy Coates to name a few. I will read this throughout the year but I also like to get into this genre around Halloween.

Mystery = I do have several from this genre as well, most notably from Agatha Christie, Frances Duncan, etc. Great for reading on a rainy day in fall, I’ll also read this one throughout the year.

Thriller/Suspense = Same as with mystery, I have a few I like to read like Shari Lapena and Lucy Foley. This is something that will keep me on the edge of my seat but without scaring the crap out of you like horror will. I think this genre takes the best aspects of mystery and horror to combine them into one genre.

Romance = I didn’t really get into this genre until I read the Twilight series . Most notable authors are Stephanie Meyer, Maggie Stiefvater and Tracy Wolff. This is good to read around Valentine’s Day, however, I’ll generally take a stab at this genre when I want to take a break from some of the other genre’s.

Fantasy = There are a few from this genre like Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance Cycle”, or Ransom Riggs’ “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” series, or C. S. Lewis’ “Chronicles of Narnia” series, or Michelle Paver’s “Chronicles of Ancient Darkness”…….that’s kind of a lot, isn’t it? This genre is probably the most read, for me.

Poetry = I do read this on occasion, however, I didn’t start reading this genre till a couple of years ago when I set a goal for myself to try something new and get myself out of my comfort zone a little bit. Most notable authors is Courtney Peppernell and Rupi Kaur.

Children’s or Young Adult = I can dive into some of this as long as the story can hold my attention. Examples can include, but not limited to, the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, the Stoneheart trilogy by Charlie Fletcher, the Land of Stories series by Chris Colfer, the Wardstone Chronicles by Joseph Delaney, etc.

Crime Drama = This genre is what I reserve for the “who-dun-it” type books. One such example is the “Gotcha!” series by Wayne Hancock. Another includes the Millennium trilogy that was started by Stieg Larsson and the books that have continued the series have been written by David Lagercrantz.

Science Fiction = I have read some of the literature from the Horus Heresy series. It’s from the fictional setting of Warhammer 40,000 and includes authors such as Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill, Ben Counter, James Swallow, etc. I made it through book #17 when I quite reading the series and I think they’re up to sixty something books the last time I looked. I hadn’t realized that that series was going to go on for that long when I got my start in it. I was trying to read the 3 books while I was waiting for the 4th book to be released.

Historical Fiction = This is a genre that I’ve just started reading in the last couple of years. This is one that I don’t read all that often. Like poetry, I started reading this to get out of my comfort zone and try something different. My favorite so far is “The Last Bookshop in London” by Madeline Martin.

I think my favorite is probably fantasy given that it’s the genre that I read the most often or the one genre that I spend the most time in. There are a lot of good genre’s here though.
