Should parents or other adults be able to ban books from schools libraries? Why or why not?
I think it’s one thing if a parent doesn’t allow their own child to read certain material but I don’t think they should get to make that decision for everyone. As an adult, I would rather read a book for myself and decide if it’s good or bad. When the Harry Potter series first came out, there were some people that believed that it was teaching witchcraft to their kids and therefore, want the series removed from the libraries. I went out and read the series myself because I wanted to form my own thoughts and opinions on the series instead.
Another thing…..if a parent lets their child read a banned book then the parent can use those moments as a teaching moment instead of trying to hide those books away. Which would you rather deal with? The child going ahead and reading the book anyway behind your back? Or letting the child read the book and then talking to them afterwards and using the material to teach your child the difference between good and bad?
