20 Short Novels To Stay Up All Night Reading

I found this article describing these 20 novels that’ll have you up all night reading (link can be found at the bottom of this article). I’ve only read one novel on this list and it’s the book by Shirley Jackson. I do want to read the book “Visitation” by Jenny Erpenbeck. They way they describe that book…..it’s peeked my interest. So, if I’m going to read anything on this list then it’ll probably be that one.

  • Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin
  • Visitation by Jenny Erpenbeck
  • A Separation by Katie Kitamura
  • The Vegetarian by Han Kang
  • A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes
  • Desperate Characters by Paula Fox
  • Elect Mr. Robinson for a Better World by Donald Antrim
  • Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
  • Black Water by Joyce Carol Oates
  • We Have All Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
  • Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

  1. ‘Black Water’ and ‘We the Animals’ are both good, ‘We the Animals’ was also made into a movie (which I haven’t seen.) I didn’t really care for ‘Fever Dream’ and ‘Mrs. Caliban.’

    1. Thank you for the input. I was thinking of reading “Visitation” by Jenny Erpenbeck. That’s the one that stands out to me.

      1. I just looked it up on Goodreads and it sounds interesting. Added it to my TBR list! 🙂
