{Warning: There will be spoilers if you haven’t already read this book before.}
I finished reading this over the weekend and let me say….this was hard for me to read. The main character kind of got on my nerves a little bit. He constantly wondered off topic onto a side story (that drives me crazy when people do that). I”m surprised I didn’t loose interest in this story pretty quickly. It was a good thing this was not a very long book.
I understand the main character is a teenager and you kind of have to deal with some teenage angst when reading books like these. I know that stuff isn’t for everyone. For some people, that will throw them off a book completely. For other people, they can deal with it if the story line is good enough. For me, I didn’t feel the story was all that good.
The main character had 3 days before Christmas break from school. He decided to go ahead and leave school because he was flunking all of his classes but one and they were going to kick him out anyway. So, he goes on this 3 day excursion all over town. If I did that, I would have been grounded for the rest of my life and not allowed to see the light of day. I mean, they would have been mad at me in the first place if they found out I was flunking most of my classes…..but to find out I avoided going home for 3 days would have made the situation much worse than it already was. Plus, the parents had already received a letter in the mail saying that he wasn’t doing well in school so you know they’re going to figure it out anyway. It’s not like you could hide it…..

Synopsis: The hero-narrator of The Catcher in the Rye is an ancient child of sixteen, a native New Yorker named Holden Caufield. Through circumstances that tend to preclude adult, secondhand description, he leaves his prep school in Pennsylvania and goes underground in New York City for three days.
