Reading young have an effect on you?

Do you think you are more likely to become a reader if you are encouraged to read when you are young?

Like a lot of people, I had to read for school. Luckily, the teachers I had let us pick what books we got to do our book reports on. Other than that, reading was encouraged and never forced. I have some fond memories of going to the library as a youngster and checking out books to read. I had a few books that I owned but I usually had to borrow books from the library if I wanted to read it.

Below is an article I found a couple of days ago that explains that growing up surrounded by books could have a powerful, lasting effect on the mind. Do you agree or disagree?

My mother encouraged me to read from a very young age so I began around 3 to learn my alphabet and 4 to start reading. My sister is a year older than I am so I was doing things at her age level just to keep up with her. I feel that reading at an early age helps the brain to handle many other things later on in life as it gets strengthened. I also did very well in math at an early age but couldn’t hold onto that lead at all.

    1. I may not have been the best reader in my class but it was never a competition to me. I just enjoyed reading because I found it entertaining in some way.

  2. There is a clear link between reading and intelligence. Never stop reading books. Its important to form good reading habits at a young age. I encourage my children to read books as often as I can. I read to my youngest every night before bed. It’s that important. I am hoping that he will go from being read to, to reading to me, to reading to himself. Books are a solid basis for a good life.

    1. I’m glad you are supportive of your children becoming a reader. I think reading can provide a way to relieve stress as well. No matter how long or how hard my day has been at work, I can always relax at the end of the day by reading at least a little before bed.

Ever since a young age, I was encouraged to read by my parents, and it started out, them reading novels to me. It has definitely helped me expand my vocabulary, grammar, and general writing skills. A positive impact, to say the least.

    1. I’m glad your parents encouraged you to read and read to you when you were young. I loved reading on my own when I got old enough but I enjoyed it when someone would read to me before I was old enough.
