Similar interest….?

What do you do when you meet someone out in public who is reading a favorite book/series of yours? Do you strike up a conversation with them or do you leave them alone to read?

What if you meet someone out in public that you suspect is a fan of your favorite book/series (for example, they are wearing some clothes or they have a visible tattoo that advertises said book/series)? Do you strike up a conversation with them then?

If someone is in the middle of reading something, I would leave them be. Especially if I’ve already read that book/series then I don’t want to spoil it for them before they are finished reading it. I don’t like it when someone reveals a spoiler to me so I won’t do it to someone else unless they give me permission to do so.

If I see someone wearing a t-shirt showing off their favorite books (or if they have a visible tattoo), usually I’ll strike up a conversation with them or at least make a nice comment about it.

If I see someone reading a book I’ve enjoyed I will not talk because I’m really bashful in person. But if I see that person wearing some accessory that relates to a book I love then I will probably point (which is rude but I don’t think about those things in the moment) and smile and the person will most likely show off that item more and smile in return. As much as I would love to discuss some of my favorite books in person, I’m just not that good at remembering on the spot enough vital information so I shy back.

    1. You could ask them what is their favorite part of the book if you can’t remember anything yourself. Maybe that will spark a discussion, if you really want to chat with that person. I’ve been known to point at the item myself (I forget it’s rude to point also). I’m also really bad about stopping to read people’s shirts so it looks like I’m staring at people (staring is another thing that people consider to be rude). I often have to apologize to people for “staring” and I have to explain to them that I was just reading their shirt.

  2. I remember meeting some of the folks who were into LOTR and I loved meeting those people. We managed to exchange our numbers and a lot of those are now friends on discord too. I think when you meet like minded people, you tend to meet a lot of them who meet similar interest. And this can be pretty fun as well meeting them and spending time with them. In this day and age meeting like minded people is rare and also like a blessing of experience.

    1. I think you’re right. It can sometimes be a blessing when you meet some of these people. Sometimes they turn into friends. Sometimes it’s just nice to have a friendly conversation with someone about an interest you both share (even if you don’t end up becoming friends). It may end up being something that brightens your day when you meet someone who has similar interests because you can discuss with them for a minute about what you love.

  3. As much as I may like to sometimes, my social anxiety would never let me approach someone like that. I think it is also very rare but cool when you are able to connect with someone in real life, so if you can you should go for it. But I would not disturb them, maybe I would wait to see if they have a break for a drink or something and quickly compliment their book choice.

    1. Social anxiety sucks. I think it’s cool when people are able to connect that way as well. I wear certain t-shirts when I know I’m going to be out in public and hope that it strikes up a conversation with someone else that likes the same thing.

I either treat people like complete strangers or people I’ve known all my life… common ground will either emerge or I’ll be walking away feeling very awkward lol🤦‍♂️

    1. That’s kind of me. If some common ground doesn’t usually present itself at some point, then it becomes kind of awkward meeting a person I’ve never met before.

True… I’m kind of awkward to begin with lol!
I think of it like spaghetti…. you make a throw of it and it sticks, you’re good to go. If you make a throw at it and it falls… well.. stop lol!
