Reading books that are considered controversial….?

Do you read books that are considered controversial? If you do, what books have you read? What was controversial about that particular book? What made you read it?

I’ve read the Harry Potter series and there was some controversy surrounding those books. There were some parents that wanted those books pulled from the shelves because they believed it was teaching witchcraft to their children. I read the series because I had several friends and family members that were reading the series and I was mildly curious about what they were reading. Also, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and I wanted to form my own opinions on the matter.

Now, I’m not trying to pick on the Harry Potter series and point fingers at one specific literary work. I don’t mean any offense. It’s the only literature that I can recall that has had any controversy surrounding it (out of all the stuff that I’ve read or can remember reading).

    I honestly prefer to allow the literature freedom even if modern society does not accept it. I am open to old ideas which used to be a norm. I don’t mind it at all. I think we have to respect author freedom. I tend to however prefer less controversial content.

      I enjoy reading a book because I value the book as a form of entertainment. The author is trying to tell a story and I like to read stories because I find it interesting and it’s relaxing.

    This is quite a challenging question.

    I know that there are a lot of people who would go with the church if they told you not to read a book. Despite being a Christian, I still went ahead and read ‘The Da Vinci Code’ even when the church forbid reading that. Infact, that was the moment I thought and made up my mind about reading the book.

    I think reading and knowing things help you form an opinion and thats exactly the purpose of it. The more controversial it is, the more better it is.

      Despite seeing several people I knew reading the series already, I wanted to form my own opinion on the series. I don’t mean any disrespect to anyone I knew who was already reading the series. I don’t see any problem with letting people read it and form their own opinion. In some cases, if you tell someone not to read something then they may just go read it anyway.
